The Arizona Diamondbacks’s two touchdowns were enough to keep the game with the Seattle Mariners out of reach, as the Mariners scored only a touchdown and field goal. That is, if they were playing football. But a baseball score of football proportions is something else.
The Diamondbacks scored 14 runs to the Mariners’s 10, with 6 different Arizona players hitting a homerun, none more dramatic than Ryan Roberts’s inside-the-park round-tripper.
Roberts hit Hisashi Iwakuma’s second pitch of the at-bat to right-centerfield, where the ball hit the wall and bounced back past the centerfielder, Michael Saunders. Rightfielder Ichiro Suzuki threw the ball in but Roberts slid home headfirst while the relay got away from catcher John Jaso. It was the first ever inside-the-parker for Roberts.
