May 30, 2012 – Arlington, TX
The Seattle Mariners put up a football score of three touchdowns as they bombed the Texas Rangers into the stone age by a score of 21-8. Rangers pitcher Derek Holland was shelled for 8 runs as was Yoshinori Tateyama, as the Mariners led 16-0 by the end of the third inning.
With All-Star Ichiro Suzuki off for the day, there was no inkling of such an offensive output from the 13th best American League team in hitting (out of 14 teams) against the best team in hitting, though the Mariners had defeated the Rangers the day before, 10-3.
Justin Smoak had two 3-run home runs, while Dustin Ackley had a 3-run homer and Jesus Montero chipped in 4 RBIs. The run total is the highest in the major leagues so far, the mark previously held by the Rangers and the Colorado Rockies at 18.
The Rangers scored five runs in the sixth inning and a pair more in the seventh, before adding a final run in the ninth, equivalent to one touchdown with a two-point conversion.
Ironically, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
