May 12, 2012 – Darlington, SC
Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman and their crews got into a shoving match after the completion of the NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500. Busch drove through the pits near Newman’s crew too quickly, angering Newman. Following the race, Busch made things worse when he bumped Newman’s car, blaming it on distraction while taking his helmet off.
Newman didn’t believe it and confronted him. Things escalated and a NASCAR official fell onto the hood of Busch’s car while trying to restrain Newman’s gas man.
Busch was fined $50,000 with probation, a Busch crew member fined $5,000 with probation, a Newman crew member fined $5,000 with probation and the Newman crew chief placed on probation.
The fight overshadowed the win by Jimmie Johnson, his first in 16 tries and first of 2012.
No word on how the Busch or Newman Mother’s Day table conversation went the day after the fracas.
