May 23, 2012 – New York City, NY
The New Jersey Devils won 5-3 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals to put themselves one win away from the Stanley Cup finals.
The Rangers found themselves in a 3-0 hole midway through the first period and found themselves playing catchup the entire night. When they finally tied it at 3-all in the third period on Marian Gaborik’s goal, Ryan Carter’s score put New Jersey back up to stay.
Zach Parise’s empty net goal at 32 seconds finalized the scoring and brought back an eerie memory of 1994, when the Devils led in the Eastern Conference finals, three games to two, causing captain Mark Messier to guarantee a Game 6 victory. Messier scored a hat trick, the Rangers took Game 6 and then the Stanley Cup.
